My grandfather considers his life in three stages

Matrimony, two children, some bad things.

He has stood tall and unshaking like the dead apple tree

at the end of his garden. He has forged himself deep –

never moving far; making occasional trips

to local places, the garden, to see family if he has to.

He looks out at the sky from his front room window,

through the net curtains. His eyes say he is waiting

for the mob to come and unceremoniously dismantle him,

pillar by pillar, plucking out the sacred stone

at the centre of his body and smashing it to pieces

against the wall. They will leave one stone to mark the spot.

One stone to stand as the promise of a man that was,

which is better than the reality, he says,

which after all, wasn’t so great.
